JOON YOUNG
JOON YOUNG CHOI

Artist Statement
JoonYoung Choi (b. 1996) explores the layered nature of memory embedded in objects, developing a printmaking practice centred on the “reconstruction of memory.” In his work, objects function as mediators of memory, condensed with time and emotion, while memory itself emerges as a process of constant reconstruction shaped by the flow of time and emotional shifts. Trained in printmaking, Choi draws attention to the translucent yet blurred visual qualities of Moru glass, translating these effects through print-based techniques. On the canvas, forms gently overlap, and images disperse in multiple directions, creating a sense of layered impressions. These surfaces prompt viewers to move beyond the habitual act of identifying objects clearly, instead inviting moments in which perception reactivates within uncertainty. His work suggests that memory is not simply a restoration of the past, but a sensory event continually re-formed through the lens of the present.
